You’ve got the dartboard, big screen TV, and neon signs hanging on the wall, but what is your Man Cave missing? What’s missing is a stocked bar with some hearty drinks to serve your buddies. If you are like me, a Makers Mark Cask Strength Neat is all you need, but if you really want to be the master of your cave, here are a few drinks I would suggest serving.

Makers Mark Margarita

Makers Mark Margarita
  • 1 Oz. Makers Mark
  • ¼ Oz. Cointreau
  • ¼ Oz. Fresh OJ
  • ¼ Oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ¼ Oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • ¼ Oz. Agave Nector
  • Top with ¼ Oz Grand Marnier
  • Lime Wedge Garnish
  1. Pour all in to chilled shaker.
  2. Shake and strain into a salt-rimmed glass.
  3. Top with float of ¼ oz Grand Marnier.
  4. Lime wedge garnish.

  • ¾ Oz. Makers Mark
  • ¾ Oz. Dekuyper Triple Sec
  • ¾ Oz. Dry Vermouth
  • ¾ Oz. Lime Juice
  1. Fill old-fashion glass ¾ with ice.
  2. Pour ingredients in to chilled shaker.
  3. Shake and strain into glass and serve.


Summer Envy

Summer Envy
  • 1 ½ Oz. Angel’s Envy Bourbon
  • ½ Oz. Peach Liqueur
  • ¼ Oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ¼ Oz. Simple Syrup
  • 2 Sashes Angostura Bitters
  • Club Soda
  • Peach, Mint or Luxardo Maraschino Cherry Garnish
  1. Pour first five ingredients into a highball or old fashion glass.
  2. Top with club soda.
  3. Garnish with a peach, mint or Luxardo maraschino cherry.


Dog Days

Dog Days
  • 1 ½ Oz. Knob Creek Rye Whiskey
  • ½ tsp. Absinthe
  • 1 ¾ Oz. Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 1 ¾ Oz. Simple Syrup* (see notes)
  • 2 Oz. Ginger Beer
  1. In a shaker add spirits, juice and syrup.
  2. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously.
  3. Strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice and top with ginger beer.
  4. Garnish with a lemon wheel and mint sprig.
*Simple Syrup Recipe
Combine equal parts sugar and water in a sauce pan
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, until sugar is fully dissolved
Allow to cool before using in cocktail

National Bourbon Heritage Month

With the summer coming to an end there is still time for celebration.  September is National Bourbon Heritage Month.  Let me explain what makes a whiskey a bourbon (all bourbons are whiskeys but not all whiskeys are bourbons).

Federal Law states that in order to be called a bourbon a few requirements must be met.

  1. Produced in the United States
  2. Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
  3. Aged in new, charred oak barrels
  4. Distilled to no more than 160 proof
  5. Entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof
  6. Bottled at 80 proof or higher
  7. Nothing can be added during the bottling other than water

If the product is made meeting these requirements, it can be sold as a bourbon.  However, the exception is straight bourbon, which has to be aged for a minimum of two years.  If a straight bourbon is aged less than four years, it must have the age stated on the bottle.

I would love to give you the origin of bourbon, however, there are many conflicting legends and claims; some more credible than others.

If all bourbons are made this way, do they all taste the same?  The answer to the question is no.  Remember 51% is the minimum amount of corn that can be used.  Distillers may decide to use more than that.  The length of time the bourbon has been aged will affect the taste.  Where the bourbon is placed to age in the Rick House, as well as the addition of other grains such as wheat or rye affect the end result.  These are areas where distillers get to use their creativity.

We will be celebrating National Bourbon Heritage Month the entire month of September.  Be sure to stop in and pick up your favorite bottle or maybe try a new selection.
