Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and if you are like me and don’t venture out to a local restaurant to celebrate I’m here to help you plan out your romantic meal at home step-by-step and it’s easy to do. Don’t worry I’ve got your back!
If you want to wow your significant other let’s start in the Meat Department at any one of your local Coborn’s stores. The days leading up to Valentine’s Day just stop in and ask for the pre-cooked Prime Rib in the heart shaped containers. Don’t forget to ask them about Johnnie’s French Onion Aujus also. This pre-cooked Prime Rib is fully cooked so all you have to do is place it in a glass dish, pour a little of Johnnie’s French Onion Aujus over the top of the steaks and then place them in your oven at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes and you have the most succulent and tender steak imaginable.
If you want something different in the steak family we also have Ribeye’s or Surf n Turf which is a New York Strip and Lobster. Don’t forget to melt a little butter to drench your lobster in or a wedge of lemon to serve on the side, but you better hurry in because the heart shaped containers are only available while supplies last.
To add to that wonderful meal don’t forget a little dessert and we now have a new item that I am so excited about. Stop in the Produce Department and ask for the strawberries dipped in chocolate placed in a heart shape container. I also can’t forget that the strawberries are drizzled with white chocolate, which is my favorite flavor and it truly puts the whole dessert over the top.
Now Valentine’s Day is not Valentine’s without a little wine to serve with your meal and I have a perfect wine that pairs so well with steak or seafood. It’s called “Wente Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon”. It is a full body red wine and has black cherry and plum flavors along with an undertone of coffee and spice.
Now last but not least don’t forget to stop into our Floral Department for those beautiful roses to impress your friend. You put this all together and I know you will have a magical evening.

It’s the start of 2016, new resolutions and of course diet season. A year ago I started mine and I’m excited to say I have lost a total of 33 pounds and am still going strong by maintaining my healthy diet. I have never felt this good and so healthy in my life. I know sometimes when we start diets it is difficult to make sure you are eating the right food for each specific diet. That is why I am so excited to share a new program that we have in our Meat Department at Coborn’s. It is called “Ready Chef Go” and the best part is that you don’t have to be a Chef to prepare these meals. They are beyond awesome and have totally made my life so much easier, especially at dinnertime.
Even though I do two blogs a month for Coborn’s and have a million and one recipes, I struggle sometimes, and after a day at work I walk into the house and ask myself the dreaded question, “What am I going to make for dinner?” Well not anymore!
The Ready Chef Go program is a microwavable bag and also an oven ready bag. You can find these prepackaged bags in the Meat Department between the Meat and Pork sections of the self-service case. Each bag has 6 oz. of meat or seafood and 4 oz. of vegetables. The attributes of these bags are….
- It steam cooks the food to perfection.
- All the flavors and juices are retained inside the bag.
- The sealed bag reduces seafood odor at home when cooking and enhances the flavor of the additional ingredients.
All I need to do is stop at Coborn’s on the way home and pick up a couple of these bags and follow the directions on the back of the package. The packages are heated in the microwave for about 4 to 5 minutes depending on the item, and just like that I have dinner ready to eat in about 10 minutes. The packaging is so awesome that even after you cook them and open the bag if you feel they are not completely done you can reseal the package and cook them a little longer. Most microwave packages can’t be re-sealed. These Ready Chef Go meals are also great for lunch at the office, just pop them in the microwave in the lunchroom and I’m eating in about 5 minutes. I travel a lot with my job and don’t want to eat fast food all of the time when I am traveling, so they are great to take back to the hotel, pop it in the microwave and I have as close to a home cooked meal as you can get when you are on the road at a very affordable cost.
Ready Chef Go meals come in several varieties (chicken, ribs, pork chops, fajita’s, stir fry, salmon, and even fish tacos) along with a variety of vegetables (fresh asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower or green beans). What I really like about them is that there is no seasoning on the fish, which makes the seafood very healthy, and that way I can add seasoning of my choice to them if I like. However, I’ve found out that they are so great tasting that you don’t need seasoning! The flavors are locked into the bag and make the meat and seafood ultra tender and moist. You couldn’t get better vegetables like these with absolutely no seasoning added anywhere else!

Wow! What a year! 2015 is almost over and I’m looking forward to 2016 and wondering what new adventures await us all.
Have you started planning your New Year’s Eve party? Well I have got some great and very simple recipes that are going to make your life so much easier and your party planning a huge success. Here are the items that I put together that I think you will enjoy.
Bacon Wrapped Cocktail Smokies
- 2 Packages of Coborn’s Signature Cocktail Smokies
- 1 Lb. Four Brothers Smokehouse Bacon
- ¾ Cup Brown Sugar
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Take the one pound package of bacon and slice into thirds.
- Then wrap each piece of bacon around each Cocktail Smokie and use a toothpick to secure.
- Place them in a 9x13 glass dish.
- Sprinkle with ¾-cup brown sugar over the top of the wraps and bake for 40 minutes.
Maryland Crab Cakes
You can find these in the Frozen Seafood Case in the Meat Department. All you have to do is place them on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes and then they are ready to serve. They are great as an appetizers cut into quarters or you can serve them as a main entrée.
Cream Cheese & Tomato Dip
- 12 oz. Jimmy Dean’s Original Sausage
- 2-8 oz. Cream Cheese
- 10 oz. Rotel Tomatoes, undrained
- Tortilla Chips
- In a small frying pan chop up sausage into small pieces and heat until sausage is completely cooked; drain.
- Add tomatoes and both 8 oz. packages of cream cheese and heat, stirring occasionally until cheese is melted.
- Serve hot with your Tortilla Chips.
Coborn’s Signature Meatballs
These are awesome and the best part is they are fully cooked. How easy is that? Here is all I did to put this quick appetizer together.
- 10 Oz. Grape Jelly
- ¼ Cup Chili Sauce
- 2 T. Prepared Mustard
- Mix these three items together in a large bowl and then put in a dutch oven.
- Then add the fully cooked meatballs into this sauce and heat them all together for about 30 minutes and they are ready to eat!
Scrumptious Chicken Wings
Here are the quickest and easiest chicken wings I have ever made and my entire family loves them. All I did was purchase what is called “ Fryin Magic” my new best friend. I then placed my chicken wings and some of the Fryin Magic in a Ziploc bag and shook them together. I then sprayed a 9×13 glass dish with cooking spray before I placed the chicken in the glass dish. Then in a 350 oven I baked them for 1 hour, turning them once after the first 30 minutes. Now if you like a little spice I did sprinkle Cayenne Pepper over the top to give it just a little spice but you don’t have to because Fryin Magic has wonderful spices already in it.
Rutherford & Mayer Fruit Paste
I’m so excited to introduce you to this new product that has just arrived in our Deli’s. It is Fruit Paste and it is 100 pure fruit. They have several flavors but I wanted to use the Pear flavor just because that is my favorite. This is so easy just pair it with a sharp cheddar cheese. Slice the cheese and place it on an artisan cracker and then slice the fruit paste and place on top of the cheese. What an easy sweet appetizer and oh will you enjoy this.
Me’nage ‘a Trois
This wine has got to be my all-time favorite wine and I do love my selection of wines. This is a red wine from California and if you are not a red wine drinker you are in luck because they also have a white wine. This wine is a fresh, ripe, jamlike fruit flavor. Add a little cheese, a little cocktail shrimp with this wine and I guarantee that you will enjoy a very magical night.
