I have a wedding coming up in my family and I am so excited. My son is getting married in July so I decided to give my future daughter-in-law a bridal shower at my home. As a young girl, Makenzie always had a dream to have a barn wedding, and in July her dream is going to come true. So when I was planning out the Bridal Shower I wanted to come up with the same kind of theme to go along with all the festivities ahead of us.

Funeral Flowers

From flowers to statues, what should you send to a funeral?

What is the right thing to send?

What do you send to someone who has lost someone they love and care for? We suggest that you send something that you feel the family would like and something that you can say you were proud to see at the funeral home or church. In the past, funeral arrangements looked a lot the same, and very traditional. Now when we take a funeral order we ask the sender if they’d like something traditional or nontraditional and 75% of the people pick nontraditional. People are choosing stepping stones and angels and creating something that the grieving family can have as a keepsake.

Work within your budget

Most people have a price point in mind relating to what they’d like to send. So if you want to spend $30.00-$35.00 we would suggest a plant, anything in the $40.00 range and up and we can do a really nice fresh arrangement. Sometimes the sender wants to know what has been sent by others already so they can send something different. Everyone is different, and we work with everyone to make sure they get what they want.

We can help you at Coborn’s Floral

Working with the families planning the funeral can be very tough and rewarding at the same time. Some families want to have everything that was loved by the deceased represented somehow. In that case we do the best we can and suggest that the person ordering the arrangement bring in some personal items. Again there is no right or wrong way to celebrate the life of your loved ones.

A comment we once had from a guest that I will always remember is: “When I walked into the funeral home I saw this beautiful piece from the back of the room, it was a unique design. I was hoping the whole time as I was waiting to get to the front, that it would be the one I sent….and it was!” She was so happy and the family members all wanted to take that same piece home with them. The guest and the family were happy, and I was too. That is the experience I want all of our customers to have. So it doesn’t matter if you’re consoling the grieving family or if you are part of the grieving family, we can help you. We will make it as easy as possible to make the celebration of life perfect for everyone. We encourage you to ask questions, because planning a funeral is hard and we can make it just a little easier if we know what you want.

So in conclusion, work within your budget and send something that you feel good about and something that honors your lost loved one in the best way possible.

Even though it is below zero outside, you can make it feel like spring inside with flowers. I have been designing flowers for over 30 years. I know that I don’t look a day over 29 but it’s the truth. And let me tell you, I love it!

Valentine’s Day and DIY Arrangement Tips

One of the best times of year for our department has got to be Valentine’s day! I think the young love is sooooo cute, they buy teddy bears and roses and they spend a long time picking out just the right thing. Then there are those that get a phone call from their wives at work and tell them how beautiful their co-workers flowers are and then they remember and call us to save them. For some shoppers this is the only time of the year they buy flowers so they have no idea what to pick and they have this deer in the head lights look on their face. No matter what, we can help them all!

Here are a couple tips on buying flowers and making your own arrangements.

Coborn's Blog: Creating a mixed flower arrangement

Mixed Floral Arrangement

Cut the stems at different heights with the tallest being a single flower.

Same Flower Arrangement

Taper the flowers from a taller center and the rest slightly shorter.

Coborn's Blog: Creating a modern floral arrangement

Modern Arrangement

Cut flowers short and arrange close together to provide a tussie-mussie look just above the vase. This is a good look when working with a cubed vase. With taller vases you want to make sure your opening at the top is not too large for the size of your bouquet because it makes it appear half full instead of a nice full look.

Coborn's Blog: Creating floral arrangement with greens

Arranging with Greens

Insert the greens before or after you have the flowers in the vase, there is no right or wrong way to do this. If you insert the greens from all around the vase it will create a grid to keep the flower stems from just moving wherever.

Coborn's Blog: How to cut flowers

Cutting stems

If you cut the flower stem at an angle it gives them more area to drink water.
Cutting flowers under water is old school and is no longer practiced.

But, if the flower department is a little scary for you…don’t worry. Stop by the Coborn’s location in Sauk Rapids and I will be here to help you.

Wedding Flower Trends

Wedding Flowers is one other thing that I absolutely love about my job is doing wedding shows. We just had a booth at the St. Cloud Wedding Expo this January, which was a huge success! A lot of brides just got engaged over the holidays and come in with their moms, girlfriends and bridesmaids to take it all in and start planning. Some weddings are still two years out, but it is a great way to see what things you like and don’t like.

Coborn's Blog: Wedding Flower TrendsCoborn's Blog: Wedding Flower TrendsOne of the trends that we are seeing this year is the many shades of green from a pale mint to a darker green,we have a lot of brides coming in for that. Pictured here is a topical bouquet. It has beautiful pink mink proteas along with spray roses, green spider mums, fushia gerbera daisies and large aspadistra leaves. This arrangement is perfect if you are planning a summer wedding or just like a different look for your wedding.

We also had beautiful arrangements like the butterfly tree. It stood about 10 feet tall and had over a hundred butterflies on it along with some gems. We had a lot of brides taking pictures of that to create their own version.

One of our really popular bridal packages is the $99.99 rose special. With that you receive a bridal bouquet and three bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres for the groom, three groomsmen, two ushers and two fathers plus two mother’s corsages. That is very pocketbook friendly, simple and chic.

Coborn's Blog: Free Printable - Wedding Flower Checklist

A lot of brides often ask me what they all need and who all needs to be honored with a flower? I have provided you with a printable flower checklist below. Simply print it off and check off all of the flowers you will need for your big day. This will help you get an idea of what you will need. However you can always come in for a free wedding flower consultation and one of our experienced staff members will be able to help you do the same. We would love to hear from you. Not from the St. Cloud area? Give me a call and tell me where you live and I will be able to provide you with the name of someone you can talk to at a Coborn’s near you.
