How to make DIY Homemade Bathroom Cleaner Spray with Essential Oils - www.cobornsblog.comWhen I started making my own natural products for around my home, one of the hardest things for me to give up was my bleach-filled bathroom cleaner.  I knew how many germs gathered in the bathroom and I wanted to make sure that every time I cleaned it, they were GONE.   With this homemade cleaner, I feel just as confident that the germs are gone and it is great for sinks, toilets and showers and, the best part, no harmful chemicals! No more need to wear thick gloves or leave the bathroom window open and only clean when the kids are clear of the area due to toxic fumes.  In fact, now the kids can HELP with cleaning the bathroom!

For this blog I used Veriditas Essential Oils from Coborn’s. Veriditas are Certified Organic and Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, conveniently sold at your local grocery store. In fact, I purchased all of the items for this blog at Coborn’s. From the Veriditas Essential Oils to the Empty Spray Bottle. You will typically find all of these items in the Natural Foods Department, however some Coborn’s stores have their natural and organic items integrated throughout the grocery store, so just ask an employee if you need some help. The distilled water is by the bottled water and I found the spray bottle by the brooms and other cleaners.

You can also Click Here and print a label for your bottle. Simply open the file and print on Avery 42395 labels and stick to your bottle, or if you want to be crafty, you can cut around the shape to make it really cute.

In the recipe below it calls for 15 drops orange and 15 drops lemon. I actually use 8 drops of each. It is really your own preference, do what smells best to you.

Also note that depending on the size of your spray bottle, you may be able to double this recipe for twice as much cleaner!

Homemade Bathroom Cleaner Spray
 
Ingredients
  • 2 Cups Distilled Water
  • 1 T. Super Washing Soda
  • 3 T. Liquid Castile Soap
  • 15 Drops Veriditas Good Samaritan Essential Oil
  • 15 Drops Orange and/or Lemon Essential Oil
  • Empty Spray Bottle
Instructions
  1. Pour distilled water into a large bowl
  2. Add Super Washing Soda.
  3. Quickly stir together to dissolve Super Washing Soda.
  4. Mix in the rest of the ingredients.
  5. Pour mixture into an empty spray bottle.
  6. Shake before each use.

Spring is finally here and that’s a great time to try essential oils.  You’ve likely heard of essential oils, know someone who uses them or use them yourself.  And everyone has an opinion on what’s the best brand or the best way to use them.  I just want to share some of my favorite, easy ways to use essential oils and maybe include some education along the way!

What are Essential Oils?

So what is an essential oil, anyway?  They are highly concentrated, aromatic essences of plants.  They are 75 to 100 times more concentrated than dried herbs.  Essential oils are 100% pure plant oils and are very different from synthetic fragrance oils.

Different plants have different amounts of oils.  It takes 50 pounds of eucalyptus to make one pound of essential oil.  But it takes over 2000 pounds of rose to make the same amount!  That is why different oils have different costs.

Different oils also have very different properties.  They can be relaxing, energizing, nourishing or balancing.

Essential oils are very concentrated.  Please take time to learn about their properties and actions before you use them.  Use reputable information.  Oils are great fun, but very powerful.

Morning Jumpstart

Now, onto the fun!  There are endless ways to use oils throughout the day.  I jumpstart my morning by sprinkling a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint in the shower, away from where I stand.  The hot water activates the smell and the smell wakes me up!  Quick and easy.

Next stop is my poor, winter weary face.  Earlier in the season, I was so dry and dull and nothing was helping.  I found a simple recipe for a facial mist.  It’s just 4 ounces water, 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin and 24 drops of the oils best suited to your skin type.  I used lavender, geranium and sandalwood that is blended with jojoba.  I put it all in a small spray bottle, shook it and spritzed it.  I use it before my moisturizer and another light spritz to set my makeup.  After a couple weeks, a salesperson in a store actually complimented me on my lovely skin.  That wouldn’t have happened a few weeks earlier!  And it was a much less expensive solution than those miracle creams.  And likely safer.

Available at Coborn's - www.cobornsblog.comRemember that your skin is the body’s largest organ.  Whatever you apply topically absorbs into your bloodstream.  It’s the reason medicine can be applied via a topical patch.  So slathering ourselves with chemicals that you wouldn’t ingest just doesn’t make good sense to me, personally.  There are so many great options. If you don’t want to make your own products, there are many high quality, safe skin care items that use essential oils, like our great local friends at Purple Prairie. Another favorite way to use oils is with a diffuser.  There are many styles to choose from, we have three at home that are electric.  You simply fill them with water and oil.  They can be like mini humidifiers, adding moisture and great scents to your house.  My teenage son was waking up with a dry throat this winter, so we put one in his room.  Adding lavender or neroli oils give the added benefit of better sleep. Plus diffusers are a much better choice than spraying chemical air fresheners in your house.  Do you really want to breathe that in?

Speaking of spraying chemicals in your house, another great way to use oils is in DIY cleaning products.  You can find great recipes online.  I get email newsletters from Aura Cacia and it just recently included tons of great ideas.  One favorite is to put 18-27 drops of your favorite oil on a cotton ball and vacuum it up!  It’ll stay in the bag and freshen while you work.

Spring is a great time to fill your house with the fresh smell of lemon, orange and grapefruit.  In the winter, I prefer the earthy smells of pine, vetiver, and sandalwood.  But when they weather warms up, I am ready for sunny citrus smells.  It’s all about what you like!

I know what you are thinking: it’s cold outside, it gets dark early, and that all makes it difficult to be active, eat nutritious and try to stay fit and healthy during these long winter months.  That is why I want to take this opportunity to revitalize your desire to be well with some easy tips to keep you going through these harsh winter months.  Doing so will not only keep you in a better mood, but it will keep your immune system functioning at high speed, helping to prevent you from getting sick.

First, remember it’s not just being active and it’s not just eating right; both are important in combination with each other.

For fitness, if joining the gym is in your budget and motivates you to exercise on a regular basis, that is awesome. Bring your friend or spouse along to keep it fun and to keep you committed. It’s warm indoors, plus it’s an opportunity to get out of the house and around others who share your passion for fitness and health.  There are usually fun classes offered to mix it up or you can use the equipment.

Keep in mind even just walking or biking is excellent exercise; even if just for 20 minutes, it really is better than nothing. Don’t forget your iPod with your favorite music! That is sure to amp up your energy level!  If you are still struggling like I am, and I am really struggling with this one personally because I don’t have the motivation myself, I will definitely be recruiting one of my friends.  When I lived with my cousin, we would go to the gym every night, and I can’t believe I am saying this, but I honestly looked forward to it. It was a way to unwind and have some girl time. We would walk alongside each other or ride bikes and just chat about our day and before you know it, there went an hour. Try to spend your time doing “mindless” exercise… rather than “mindless” eating.  It doesn’t have to be “typical” ways of working out at the gym, either. What about playing tennis, soccer, volleyball, basketball, or swimming at your gym? Sometimes all it takes is getting a new workout outfit, or new gym shoes, or even just a fun water bottle or gym bag!

Okay maybe the gym isn’t your thing, then be active in other ways. This is where the “living an active lifestyle” comes in.  These are all the tips, such as: taking the stairs, parking father away from the building, walking some extra laps around the mall when running errands, or having a family outing at the bowling alley or the roller-skating place instead of going out to eat.

Or how about embracing the winter and playing winter sports such as skiing, sledding, ice skating, hockey, or snowshoeing?

Maybe you feel like staying in the house. Okay then, how about lifting soup cans, doing sit ups and pushups during commercials, or putting in a workout DVD? How about jump roping in your living room or buying a treadmill and setting it in front of the TV? O you can play an active Wii game with your kids! Guess what? Cleaning your house is even considered a form of activity! Did you know you can burn nearly 200 calories in an hour?!

Now for the eating right part…

First and foremost, don’t engage in another one of those fad diets. Just eat real food. Here are some basics to healthy eating:

  1. Eat enough fruits and vegetables – at least one of each with every meal – and add more at snacks! Remember, all forms count: Fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and 100% juice.
  2. Consume healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, canola oil, Smude’s sunflower oil, and nuts and seeds.
  3. Incorporate lean proteins. But don’t OD on the protein part. The average adult really only needs about 50 grams per day.
  4. Substitute refined grains for whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, and oatmeal, to name a few.
  5. Limit added sugars to 25 grams per day; this does NOT include whole fruits or 100% juice.  However, this does include honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, and raw cane sugar.
  6. Reduce sodium intake to 2300mg/day.
  7. Be aware of your portions.

Keeping track of your progress really seems to work for a lot of people. It makes them aware of their daily needs, they can make goals based on that, and then track their progress. If you start to track, be sure to reward yourself when you reach those goals.

“It looks like a green onion”, but it is a leek.

We hear that all the time in the Produce world. Leek is slowly growing in popularity, but still remains in the category as somewhat of a gourmet type item. They have been around for many, many years, yet many people have never heard of them. Availability is year round and prices do not fluctuate much. The fall/ winter season seems to be when people use them the most. My favorite way that I have enjoyed leek is in soup, specifically Potato Leek soup. I love the mild, creamy onion flavor that it offers. Very simple, and easy to make. Leeks can also be sliced as a relish, eaten with a dip or raw, braised in the oven, diced, or added to a salad which adds a crunchy onion flavor.

Some of the health benefits known about leeks are that they are high in fiber and potassium. They are also known to help lower cholesterol and have many other vitamins benefits as well.

Leeks grow in the ground like a regular onion. The root and the white part are underground with the green tops sticking out. Because of this, the most important thing is to make sure that they are cleaned properly before using.  Cleaning them is quite easy. Cut the roots off of the bottom and chop off the top part between green and white. Then cut again lengthwise, and rinse under cold water. The dirt in there comes out pretty easy. Once they are clean, you are ready to dice up the leek. The white part is the part that is typically eaten. They are the most tender and have a mild flavor. The all green part is quite tough, with a strong flavor.

This is very simple and easy to do. You could add more ingredients if you so choose. Other things I may add from time to time might include diced carrots as another vegetable or diced ham or cooked chicken if you are looking for meat in yours. If you’re looking to try a different kind of soup, give this one a try. It is different, but oh so good.

Potato Leek Soup
Cook time: 
Total time: 
Serves: 6
 
Ingredients
  • 3 Large Leek, cut lengthwise, separate, and clean. Pale white and white part only, dice, and chop.
  • 2 T. Butter
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 2 Cups (1 can) Chicken Broth
  • 2 Lbs Potatoes, peeled, and diced
  • ¼ Cup Fresh or Dried Parsley
  • ½ tsp. Dried Thyme
Instructions
  1. Cook diced leek in butter with salt and pepper in a medium sauce pan.
  2. Cover and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes checking often, as you do not want leeks to brown at all.
  3. Add water, broth, and potatoes.
  4. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes.
  5. Take about half of your soup mixture out of the pan and put in blender to puree it. This will still give you some soup that will have some chunks. You could puree all of it; if you want it real smooth and creamy with no chunks - your call.
  6. Return mixture to pan, add thyme and parsley.
  7. Season with more salt, 1 to 2 teaspoons, and ground pepper to desired taste.
Notes
Replace chicken broth with vegetable broth for a vegetarian option.

The Wonder of Watkins

One of my favorite Minnesota brands is J.R. Watkins. They started out in Plainview, Minnesota, back in 1868 selling their pain relieving liniment. It is rare that a product is so effective and popular that it is still for sale 145 years later!

They built the business through door to door sales and independent distributors. I am sure many of you recall seeing Waktins Distributor signs in the yards of your neighbors. You can still spot a few today and I saw a nice couple selling them at a booth at the county fair recently.
