Wine Wedding Gift

Wine Wedding Gift -

Holly - Practial Party Planning -

My husband and I had the pleasure celebrating one of my husband’s high school friend’s weddings this past Friday. I am typically in charge of the gift, which is fine with me because I absolutely love gift giving. We could go with money, which is always appreciated, but I wanted to do something a bit different… of course!

92 years and going strong, thanks to our tremendous employees and customers

Hello, I’m Emily Coborn, Corporate Communications Manager for Coborn’s, Inc. I grew up in the grocery industry and really do love it. I also have a passion for writing, reading, cooking and eating so writing a blog for a food retailer seems like a natural fit. Over the coming months, I look forward to giving you a sneak peek into what it’s like to be part of our employee-owned family.

Before I get started, though, here’s a little bit about me…My first job at age 16 was as a Coborn’s cashier. I also worked in the Floral Shoppe and at a Holiday convenience store over the next couple years. After college and a few years of exploring other opportunities, I felt the urge to rejoin Coborn’s and I’ve never looked back. I love being part of a forward-looking company that is committed to the communities we serve.

When I’m not busy with work, you might catch me out exploring a new restaurant (I’m a foodie), channeling my inner Julia Child, traveling to a new exciting destination, running or reading a great book. But for now, it’s all work, as we celebrate our 92nd Anniversary this week. To do that, I thought I’d share some insights on our long and wonderful history.

Chester Coborn Sr., Duke Coborn, Chester Coborn Jr.
Sauk Rapids, MN 1920

It all started in the early 1900s when my great-great-grandfather Chester Coborn opened a grocery store in Sauk Rapids’ oldest landmark, the Bell Building. Back then, a quart of milk sold for 14 cents, a loaf of bread for 9 cents, a dozen eggs for 18 cents, and pork and beans for 5 cents – imagine! Now, fast forward nearly a century…Chester’s original store has been built at least four times over, pork and beans cost way more than 5 cents, and we are celebrating our 92nd anniversary as an employee-owned company with 7,000 employees and 47 stores across the Midwest. And, we serve thousands of customers every day in our conventional grocery stores, our fuel stations/convenience stores, in our pharmacies and coffee shops, with dry cleaning service and through our home delivery services.  While our employees are an integral part of our success, our customers motivate us each and every day to work hard and provide a quality shopping experience.

It’s mindboggling for me to think of all the changes that our company has endured over the years – the Roaring 20’s, the Depression, World Wars, Y2K, and everything in between – but it is inspiring more than anything. Our company has evolved and adapted to this ever-changing, wild, crazy and wonderful world, thanks in large part to our employees’ and customers’ tremendous loyalty and longevity.

Inaugural ESOP Celebration 2012

At our inaugural ESOP Celebration this past June, employees who celebrated service milestones in 2012 (5 years, 10 years, 15 years…all the way up to 40 years!) were invited on stage to be recognized. In total, nearly 1,800 employees celebrated service milestones last year and 30 celebrated milestones of more than 30 years. Compare this to the average U.S. worker’s tenure of 4.6 years, and it’s truly remarkable.
As a fifth generation family member early in her career, I’m humbled and inspired by these and so many others I get to work with on a daily basis. It takes everyone working together to make our employee-owned company successful each and every day, and I’m just a small piece of the puzzle. We win together and lose together, and there’s a sense of shared accountability across our organization.

In addition to celebrating our 92nd anniversary this month, we’re also celebrating retirements for three lifetime employees:
·    Larry W., Store Manager at Cash Wise in Waite Park, MN – 30 years of service
·    Henry H., Liquor Store Manager at Coborn’s on Pine Cone Road in Sartell, MN – 41 years of service
·    Mary W., Print Services Signage Clerk at Corporate Office – 25 years of service
We are so grateful to Larry, Henry and Mary for their incredible contributions to our company. They have made us who we are today and we are fortunate to have had them as part of our Coborn’s family.

So, as we celebrate our 92nd anniversary, we also tip our hats to our employees, especially Larry, Henry and Mary, and to our customers, for your loyalty and patronage. We are a strong and stable company with a bright future ahead because of you. You have left a lasting impression on our company and I am confident that Chester would be proud.
