Fall is finally here! It’s my favorite time of the year because the temperature is perfect and the fall colors are amazing. You can throw a sweatshirt on and go for a walk and enjoy the neighbor’s garden or your own. I love watching the leaves turn color and seeing the fall flowers in full bloom. Some of the most popular fall plants are the mums that bloom in so many colors like yellow, orange, maroon, rust and red, and mixed in a garden with sage, asters and ornamental kale, pansies and verbena make a stunning statement to everyone passing by it.
When you see hardy mums for sale, you may wonder if they are annuals or perennials. They are a perennial but not for the northern zones of Minnesota. If you put enough mulch on them and cover them very well they may come back next year. Your best bet is to bring them in over winter to ensure that they will come back for you.
Even though the nights are getting cooler the mums will continue to open during the day when the sun is shining and only after a killing frost will the blossoms die. When the plant is dried up, it’s time to cut it back to about four inches above the ground and either bring it inside or cover it with mulch and some sort of plastic or Styrofoam container. In the spring remove all covering and let it start to grow again.
I hope you take time to enjoy the autumn colors and maybe even jump in the piles of leaves that will soon be everywhere. Cover your blooming plants on the cold nights to prolong their blossoms a little longer. Just remember to cover them well over winter or bring them in until spring. Happy Fall, ya’ll!
