Before sitting down to write this blog, I decided a critical piece of research involved diving into a hot, cheesy Heggies pizza. Having lived in Minnesota most of my life, I’ve tried and loved several different varieties of Heggies, but today I went with my favorite – cheese and sausage. It was everything a pizza should be!
This local gem of an operation began in 1989 when Heggies Pizza’s original owners, Don and Polly used their experience running successful pizzerias to begin making their popular thin crust pizzas and freezing them for local resort owners. It didn’t take long before they were being sold in local grocery stores and fans all over the state, including myself, began craving this incredible, hand made pizza.
Heggies makes all the classic favorites—cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and combination—as well as their signature (and legendary) “Six Pack” variety, with four meats and two cheeses. I like to stock up on several different kinds, so it’s always in the freezer for a quick dinner or a late-night snack.
The Heggies craze has caught-on among online fans as well. They enjoy a 95% rating on UrbanSpoon and have fans talking about their yummy pizza on Chowhound as well. It seems their commitment to using the freshest ingredients and creating each pizza by hand has made them a true local favorite!
