Homemade Trail Mix Recipes
Trail mix is a great snack – you can customize it in so many ways and it’s easy to transport. No sauces, dips or mess to worry about when you’re traveling with kids, going for a hike or just working at your desk.
August 31 is actually National Trail Mix Day so we thought we’d take a look at some of our favorite recipes. And of course you can always just buy your favorite trail mix when you’re grocery shopping, or have it delivered with the rest of your groceries.
Make Your Own Trail Mix
We had to turn to the experts first on trail mix – the Boy Scouts! They like to have each Scout bring a box or bag of their favorite cereal, nuts, pretzels, raisins, dried fruit, M&Ms, etc. At camp or before the hike, they mix everything in a bag or big bowl and then pass out a portion in sealable bags to each child.
If you want a trail mix that’s heavier on fruit – look beyond just dried apples and banana chips. Add in dried cranberries, dried pineapple, dried apricots and even figs for some great vitamins! It’s a great way to create a delicious trail mix that’s also peanut-free!
Sweet Salty Trail Mix
This recipe for trail mix combines several kinds of nuts, chocolate, ginger and coconut for an elegant, grown-up snack or late night craving.
Ingredients
- 2 cups salted, roasted peanuts
- 1 cup whole salted, roasted almonds
- 1 cup whole salted, roasted cashews
- 1 cup good-quality milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup dried blueberries
- 1 cup dried cherries
- 1/4 cup crystallized ginger, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup unsweetened, flaked coconut
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, and mix until everything is evenly distributed.
Peanut-Free Trail Mix
If you want to avoid peanuts (and other nuts) in your trail mix but still want the protein – try lentils! This recipe is an updated version of trail mix with lentils, rice and dried fruit. It’s colorful and delicious. The key is to bake the lentils instead of boiling them so they’re crunchy and satisfying when paired with dried fruit, pepitas and sunflower seeds.
