Centennial Bagger Advances to State Competition
Katie Theisen from Coborn’s on Veterans Drive in St. Cloud, MN took home the esteemed title of Coborn’s Best Bagger and collected a $100 cash prize at Coborn’s 23rd annual Best Bagger Competition last night. Her speed, technique and attitude led to her victory over nearly 50 other baggers from many other Coborn’s stores across Central Minnesota.
This was Theisen’s first year competing in the Best Bagger Competition but she’s no newbie to the art of bagging. After 13 years with the company, she’s got the bagging routine down pat, and will now represent Coborn’s at the Minnesota Grocers Association’s Best Bagger Contest at Mall of America on Aug. 18, where she will compete for a $500 first prize and a trip to Las Vegas in February 2013. If she makes it to Vegas, she will compete in the National Grocers Association’s Best Bagger Contest, for a chance to take home a whopping $10,000.
Coborn’s Chief Operating Officer Bob Thueringer, who began his 45-year career with Coborn’s bagging groceries at the original Sauk Rapids, MN store, was on the scene as one of the judges. In addressing the contestants, he explained, “Convenience is one of Coborn’s pillars and bagging groceries well is one of the ways that we make shopping convenient for our customers.”
He continued, “Our baggers leave the final impression on our customers. Doing the small things right, like putting all of the refrigerated items together, protecting glass items by putting them in the middle of a bag, and never putting eggs at the bottom of a bag, make a big difference.”
Among her fierce competition were runners-up Bre Osendorf from Coborn’s in St. Joseph, MN and Kenya Urena-Muro from Coborn’s in Big Lake, MN. Both have been bagging groceries for two years and competed in last year’s Best Bagger Competition.
Since 1989, five Coborn’s baggers have advanced to the National Grocers Association’s Best Bagger Contest.
Good luck, Katie! And, great job to all of our Best Bagger competitors!
