Making Meals Fun

Getting kids to eat a good meal can be tough, but with a few simple tricks and tips, you can work to make mealtime less of a battle at home.

Cook Together

First – get your kids involved in cooking. Studies show children who help cook or feel like they had a hand in what they’re eating are more likely to prefer fruits and vegetables. In fact, the study found children were also more confident about the need to eat healthy if they helped with meal prep and cooking.

Even the youngest kids can help stir a batter or sprinkle cheese over a dish. Older children can help grate vegetables, cut up ingredients and mix together ingredients. Make sure everyone’s supervised of course!

Embrace Your Shapes

Even the most basic sandwich is more fun when cut into fun shapes. Use cookie cutters, cans or just a simple knife to cut sandwiches, fruits and vegetables into shapes. You can even find different cookie cutters now to get pretty elaborate in your presentation. What’s more fun than eating a caterpillar? Or a lunch that’s made to look like a sailboat? Or letting a piece of banana “lounge” in a pool made of a piece of watermelon? If you need some inspiration, we love this blog – it’s full of ideas!

Use Fun, Creative Dishes

Using fun dishes that are just for the kids is another way to help children get excited about their food. Bento boxes are becoming very popular since they give you several different boxes and shapes to pack lunches.
We love the idea of using an ice cube tray at mealtime or during a child’s party. Put a healthy snack in each part of the ice cube tray and voila! Kids will love the little compartments and may just try something new since it’s just a ‘little’ bit.
